DoDEA FAQs and Answers

FAQ #1:      When I try to register online at www.isafe.org, the pull-down window listing states does not include an entry for either DoDEA Pacific, Europe or United States.  How do I select an entry for DoDEA Pacific, Europe or United States in the pull-down window?

Answer:     We have fixed this problem by adding AA, AE, and AP to the state drop-down window.  Enter AA for DoDEA United States, AE for DoDEA Europe and AP for DoDEA Pacific.  In addition, we added APO and FPO as selections in the city drop-down list.

FAQ #2:      The quantities of i-SAFE materials pre-ordered for us are not adequate to meet our needs; may we order additional materials?

Answer:  Yes, you may order additional materials.  However, at the present time, your school must submit requests for additional materials to your district or area office.  In addition, i-SAFE allows each school to reproduce (at their school) whatever additional material they need (including paper copy materials and CDs and DVDs).  While i-SAFE gives you the right to copy i-SAFE materials in any amount to meet your needs, you do not have the right to alter or amend the content in any manner.

FAQ #3:      Can our school order Scantron forms?   All of the literature I have received and read on the website indicates we are able to do so; however, when I attempt to place an order in the online store, I get message that says all assessments are to be completed online.

Answer:     No.  Recent discussions between DoDEA and i-SAFE have resulted in a significant scale back on the grades 5-12 assessment requirements of i-SAFE’s Internet safety curriculum.  Effective immediately, schools will no longer need to use the paper Scantron assessment procedures.  Instead, they should use only the new online assessments whenever feasible.  Also, the number of assessments for grades 5-12 each grade-level series of lessons is now reduced from 11 to 3 for the entire series of lessons/webcasts.  What this means is that students in grades 5-12 will be asked to take only one pre-assessment prior to the beginning of the entire i-SAFE curriculum series, one post-assessment upon completion of the series, and one delayed assessment 3-6 weeks after all curriculum lessons/webcasts have been delivered.

This change will result in a significant reduction in the time required to implement the i-SAFE curriculum.

Those schools that already have administered Scantron assessments to some of their students have the option of having those students take the new pre-assessment or just proceeding with the program and, at the appropriate time, administering the new online post- and delayed assessments.  If performing the online assessments is not feasible, DoDEA has directed that schools are expected to teach the i-SAFE curriculum but are not required to administer the assessments.

There is no change to the assessments available for the K-2 series or the grades 3-4 series except for the elimination of the Scantron paper forms.

Also, The actual process for taking online assessments will remain the same.  After students enter their school ID, they will be taken automatically to the new assessments where they will again enter their school ID and grade, gender and area (“AP” for Pacific, “AE” for Europe and “AA” for United States).

FAQ #4:      The pre- and post-assessment paperwork (i.e., Scantron forms) is voluminous.  Is there anyway to reduce the amount of assessment paperwork?

Answer:     Yes! (SEE THE ANSWER TO FAQ #2 ABOVE.)

FAQ #5:      We need additional Scantron forms.  Can we simply copy more forms of the assessments and surveys or do we need to order more copies directly from i-SAFE?

Answer:     No.  DO NOT COPY Scantron forms. Effective immediately schools no longer need to use the paper Scantron assessment procedures.  Instead, they should use only the new online assessments whenever feasible (SEE THE ANSWER TO FAQ #2 ABOVE).  Assessment question/answer forms are located on i-SAFE America’s website (www.isafe.org), which students access using their school’s ID access code.

FAQ #6:      Is a pre-assessment for the Professional Development Program available online?  Where can I find it?

Answer:     We have discontinued the use of the PDP pre-assessment.  Please disregard this item. In addition, in the near future this assessment will also be available online.

FAQ #7:      I haven't been able to find the Success Plan mentioned in the Mandatory Forms Section.  Can you tell me where to find it?

Answer:     The  "Success Plan" mentioned in the Mandatory Forms Section of the Webcast is an Outreach document.  It is located in the Student Toolkit.

FAQ #8:      Why doesn’t Webcast 5 (for grades 9 – 12) have pre- or post-assessments available online?

Answer:     Webcast 5 was created after i-SAFE adopted a new (more streamlined) assessment system, which eliminates assessments for each individual lesson (SEE THE ANSWER TO FAQ #2 ABOVE). Therefore, there are no assessments specifically for Webcast 5.

FAQ #9:      Cyber Bullying assessments are mentioned but there are no supplemental lessons on Cyber Bullying for grades 9-12 curriculum.  Why?

Answer:     Cyber Bullying assessments, found online, correspond to lessons for grades 4-8 ONLY.  At this time, we do not have Cyber Bullying lessons for grades 9-12. Cyber Bullying will be the topic of Webcast 8 (for grades 9-12), which will be produced in Spring 2005.

FAQ #10:   What is the Delayed Follow-up test?  Where does it fit into the curriculum?  I did not see it in the curriculum, yet it is posted with the online assessments.

Answer:     The Delayed Follow-up assessment is used to gauge whether a student is continuing to embrace safe Internet practices learned from the i-SAFE curriculum lessons. It is administered 3-6 weeks after completion of the curriculum series and asks some specific questions about behavior changes.

FAQ #11:   Can the Professional Development Program (PDP) video on the i-SAFE website be downloaded as well as viewed online (i.e., streamed)?

FAQ #12:   As classes are completing i-SAFE lessons, is it necessary to send in the Classroom Record immediately or may I collect them and send a bundle of them at a later time?

Answer:     i-SAFE has discontinued the Classroom Record form.  It was used last year to obtain feedback on the individual lessons including teacher comments, etc.  We found the information we needed was gathered more effectively by other means.  i-SAFE encourages submission of constructive feedback on our program as this information is a main driver of process improvement.  Submit all comments to education@isafe.org
